General concepts
TAN is Tangent’s governance token. By locking TAN, users can participate in the protocol’s governance and receive a share of its earnings.
It is also possible to simply stake TAN without lock-up. However, staked TAN tokens don’t hold any governance rights.
Staking
TAN can be staked or unstaked, without any duration constraint. By staking their tokens, users receive sTAN.
sTAN holders earn a portion of protocol earnings distributed as TAN, and can’t participate in the governance of the protocol.
For more details about how sTAN functions, refer to the following section:

Locking
TAN can be locked for a fixed 3-month (13 weeks) duration. By locking their tokens, users receive vsTAN.
vsTAN holders earn the majority of protocol earnings distributed as USG, and can participate in the governance of the protocol.
